The Key to Happiness

The Key to Happiness

There are two very simplistic but extremely important things you need to know about the makeup of your emotional state:

  • Emotions are simply your reaction to thoughts.
  • Thoughts are either derived from:
    1. Observation
    2. Intention

Emotional Reaction to Thought

Your emotional reaction to thought defines your expression of the divine or in other words, your personality (what you like, what you don’t like, what you sort of like, what you like under certain conditions, what you don’t like under certain conditions, etc.). These all make up who you are.

No two people have the exact same emotional reaction to every thought or even the exact same thought about every observation. Your unique expression is not interfered with but supported by the universe.

You cannot help having thoughts about what you observe or experience. You also cannot help your emotional reaction to these thoughts. Because it is such a natural process though, you have come to associate your observations with the emotions themselves.

Most of the thoughts you have are either based on observation or a reiteration of a previous observation. So for instance if you are good at manipulating your circumstances, you may have seen something you liked, the thought of it made you feel good and you might contemplate later how to observe more of that in your life.

If you struggle with manipulating your circumstances, you may have seen something you liked, and in your contemplation of it later, become sad because you could see no way of making it a part of your life.

Intentional thought is thought not based on observation. It is a thought you have specifically chosen to introduce that brings about an emotion you wish to experience.

So then, why do so many people find it difficult to be happy?

So you attempt to manipulate your environment in such a way that it is filled with things and experiences that bring about positive emotional experiences. To the degree that you are able to do this usually reflects your emotional state.

Some, actually have enough success with this that they are content with their lives as long as nothing comes along to disrupt their circumstances

Others, like myself, find this process to be a bit like a game of Jenga, finding moderate successes after much work yet sooner or later having the expectation of an eventual epic fail realized.

Of course, things and experiences are not the only observations that bring about thoughts that bring about emotions. There are many creatures, including humans as well that you will observe.

Manipulating your circumstances is a bit easier than manipulating the people in your life. You may be able to put out citronella candles to ward off most of the mosquitos but you can’t make someone close to you agree with you about everything.

So how do I achieve an overall emotional state of happiness?

Become intentional with thought.

Think thoughts that bring about the emotions you desire. This cannot be done effectively when you are experiencing contradictory thoughts. People who try to look on the bright side of things usually struggle.

Trying to lessen the negative emotion stemming from the thought of being stood up, for instance, will not just go away by introducing a thought like, at least it’s not raining.

Instead, you have to set aside time daily to learn what thoughts make you happy and how to intensify your focus on them.

But I already know what would make me happy.

Most people don’t even realize what makes them happy.

They think that if they had a million dollars in the bank it would make them happy for instance. However, if they focus on the thought of having a million dollars, it might feel good for a moment and then spiral toward thoughts that bring about negative emotions like, I would lose a lot of it in taxes, I would have to pay off a lot of debt, people would always be asking me for money, I might not even have enough money left to quit my job but even if I could, there would be no one to hang out with because everybody’s working, Someone might try to steal it, etc.

What you actually create when you’re out of alignment

Because you are part of the divine, what you think about repeatedly becomes your beliefs, and you create your reality based on them. Your subconscious mind causes you to do and observe things that actually make whatever you think about real for you.

This means that if you actually were handed a million dollars and your thought patterns were like the example above, you would be more miserable than before you had the money. In fact, if your thoughts generally focus on lack, either all the money would be gone in short order or you would begin to focus on some other aspect of your life in which you feel lack.

Because you are part of the divine, there is no judgment as to what you create. The universe will provide you full support of your beliefs no matter what they are.

So if you’re saying a million dollars won’t make me happy but sitting around daydreaming happy thoughts every day will?

It’s not that a million dollars won’t bring happiness into your life, it’s just that it’s observational happiness. It only lasts as long as you’re thinking positive thoughts about what you are observing.

Buying a shiny new car brings all sorts of wonderful thoughts until you get your first door ding or the newness fades. And sitting still in traffic when you are driving the fastest sports car in the world may actually be more frustrating than sitting in an average car.

However, if you train your mind to think in a manner that makes you happy there is a point at which it becomes a habitual way of thinking.

When you exercise your body on a regular basis, you become stronger but if you stop, you stop becoming stronger.

When you exercise your mind though, these new beliefs that you adopt, form new neural pathways in your mind. Those neural pathways can only be undone by introducing new beliefs.

So the task of changing a belief like, I don’t have enough money, to, I become more wealthy every day, only has to be done once. Your strongest beliefs take the longest to change so it’s real important you understand how.

Blah, blah, blah. This sounds so complicated. Could you just tell me what I need to do?

Once you understand what makes you feel happy, you can feed your mind thoughts in alignment with that happiness. The thoughts have three requirements:

  1. Repeated on a daily bases while experiencing the feeling. It’s ok if you miss a day but it needs to be habitual and you want to try to do it when you are feeling positive emotionally.
  2. It must be experienced as if it is already your reality. If your thought refers to sometime in the future, the reality you create will always remain some time in your future. You can use state of becoming thoughts which I find helpful like, every week I am becoming more aware of my progress.
  3. You must actually believe them. Your mind will not create a reality outside your belief system so you have to feed it thoughts that are believable.

  • Every day I find something new that I feel good about. (All you have to do to make this one feel real is take a second to actually do it.)
  • I’m becoming more aware of when I feel good and better at making that feeling last longer. (Another simple practice to implement)
  • Being in a positive emotional state is becoming easier for me. (Because you are making an effort you will soon be able to implement this)

So what’s the takeaway from all this?

When you’re seeking answers about how to achieve happiness, the question you’re really asking is, how can I become a master at manipulating my circumstances in such a way that makes me happy?

The universe is a reflection of who you are. Just as you cannot change your appearance by drawing a mustache on your reflection in the mirror, you cannot permanently change your overall emotional state by manipulating your environment.

I have just given you the key to happiness. Those of you who are ready to receive this gift, I thank you for the opportunity to help. Helping others in this way brings me great joy.

The Mind Is a Wonderful Tool and This Is How It Works:

  • Emotions are born out of thoughts.
  • Thoughts are derived mostly from observation (or reiteration of observation).
  • Thoughts can be derived from intent.
  • Your predominant conscious thoughts become your beliefs.
  • Your subconscious mind is designed to create your reality based on your beliefs by causing you to:
    1. Observe things congruent with those beliefs.
    2. Do things (subconsciously) that bring about further evidence of those beliefs.
  • Your subconscious will not create a reality which does not have a congruent emotional response to it. (This merely means it knows when you don’t really believe what you are thinking.)
  • Your subconscious cannot create reality using a negative tense. (For instance: if you want to be less negative then focus on being more positive. Creation is the act of making something. It can not make nothing. If I handed you a lump of clay and asked you to make something with it, you could. If I asked you to make nothing out of it, it would still be a lump of clay.)

How to Use This to Your Advantage:

You can intentionally introduce a believable thought on a daily basis congruent with the desired reality you wish to create.

God, energy, the universe, or whatever term you want to use for it is infinite. That divinity does not end with you and me. It is part of everything and everyone imaginable, even a Styrofoam cup that’s been thrown in the garbage.

Your ego is your personal expression of that divinity. Coming to terms with that is extremely difficult for most because we have learned judgment. Once you practice judgment, you judge yourself in a much stricter fashion than you do anything or anyone else, which causes you to feel unworthy.

The pitfall of our recent spiritual evolution

Once judgment is introduced, the assumption becomes that there is something inherently wrong with us, because we cannot even live up to the standards we judge others by. Religion labels this as our having a sinful nature.

Recently, many people have recognized the destructive power of judgment and shame when it is displayed toward others and have shunned this aspect of religion.

Although this seems like a giant step forward in spiritual evolution, self-judgment still remains. We have just replaced the terminology from striving to squelch a “sinful nature” to letting go of the “ego.”

Why would you want to let go of your expression of the divine? That would be like a leaf on a tree only recognizing itself as the universe. It does not serve itself, the tree, the earth, etc. if it thinks being a leaf is inherently wrong. It is of greatest service to the whole when is in alignment with itself.

Finding harmony in alignment

Your expression of divinity is best served when you are in alignment with your true self. Your true self is found in that which makes you feel wonderful. Doing that which makes you feel wonderful causes you to do things that are in greatest service to others.

This may seem like an easy task but most people don’t know what makes them feel wonderful. What they think makes them feel good is in fact only making them feel better. Because their lives revolve around avoiding pain rather than pursuing happiness, that which helps avoid pain is what they equate with what makes them feel good.

Trying to get rid of your ego or your sinful nature to find your harmonious place in the universe is the root cause of suffering for so many people. You are not inherently bad or wrong. You are part of the divine. Free yourself from judgment and pursue that which makes you happy! You cannot express the universe in a more perfect way than through your ego nor can you be of greater benefit to your fellow man.

Spiritual Awakening

A spiritual awakening, or enlightenment, is not what you think it is. Almost by definition it can’t be. So if you are seeking enlightenment, you are searching for something you actually have no point of reference for.

So why do so many people seek a spiritual awakening when they don’t even know what it is?

When you are out of alignment with who you are, you feel lack. This lack longs to be filled but you have no idea how to fill it. Since you can’t find it within, you look to sources outside yourself. Because this lack is felt at the level of your soul, you look toward the spiritual.

This yearning to fill the void causes you to go outside your current spiritual or religious frame of reference because these familiar ways have not proved helpful. In fact, they may have even made you feel further out of alignment.

Upon learning that there’s something out there that allows insight about the connectedness of everything, you feel naturally drawn to it. Though you are consciously unaware, what you are actually hoping is that if you experience such a connectedness, it will fill the void. The promise of filling that void is why a spiritual awakening is considered the holy grail of spiritual achievement and why it is so sought after.

Ok, so how do I have a spiritual awakening?

You can only have a spiritual awakening after you no longer desire one. Becoming aligned with your true self, you fill the emotional void. Filling the emotional void quenches the desire for enlightenment. It is then that you can see the interconnectedness of all things and your harmonious place in it.

Then how do I become aligned with my true self?

You already know the answer to this. You just don’t know you know the answer. Even though you may not be in alignment with your true self, you inherently know who you are. Simply put, you are that which makes you feel wonderful.

It sounds kind of funny, but you actually have to learn what makes you feel wonderful. Most of the things you think make you feel good are really just things that help you avoid feeling bad. For instance, you may think that having enough money to retire would make you feel wonderful but it might just be a way of avoiding having to work. As you become skilled at understanding what makes you feel good, what makes you feel wonderful becomes what you do for a living and why would you want to avoid that?

Then how do I tell the difference?

You have to get in touch with your emotions. I don’t mean why you feel the way you feel. Examining your childhood issues to understand why you get angry about certain things will not keep you from getting angry at those certain things.

How do I get in touch with my emotions then?

There are probably as many techniques of doing this as there are gurus. The methods that I teach are very practical because I am very practical.

Most people spend their lives trying to avoid pain. This is like backing away from something. You may avoid it (though often it will chase you) but you don’t actually end up where you want to be, you just end up somewhere else trying to avoid painful things there.

Psychology takes the approach of facing the root cause of you pain in order to take away its power. There’s a lot to be said for that especially when trauma is involved but it has two built in flaws.

The first flaw is that facing the root cause of your pain is a painful process in and of itself. The second is that it can send you on a never ending root-cause search.

Whatever you focus on creates your reality so finding the root cause of your sources of pain can send you on a lifelong mission, since you can always find things that cause you pain.

I’ve been told this is a great way to do it. I have even heard stories from those who say it has benefited them tremendously. It is not something I have the patients for so I have never mustered up the motivation to do it with any regularity.

This technique has its advantages though in that once you become skilled at slowing your thoughts, you can observe them and the emotional responses you associate with them. You can then learn to hold on to the emotions you appreciate longer and release the ones that do not resonate with you more quickly which eventually becomes a subconscious act in daily life.

Even though it’s not for me, I can recommend it if you go into it with as little judgment as you can and with the intention of becoming in greater alignment with the emotions that make you feel good.

Leading with an intention of having a spiritual awakening or shedding your ego (the new age term for evil) is not helpful at all. The intention of having a spiritual awakening is actually just highlighting a void and shedding the ego implies judgment. Your ego is your expression of the divine.

Moving Forward

The method I used which lead to my enlightenment was to become intentional with my thinking rather than observational. This, forward thinking method not only leads you away from that which is not in harmony, it leads you toward that which is.

The greatest stumbling block I had with this method was overcoming judgment. When you desire something, in order to obtain it, you must feel worthy of it. Otherwise your subconscious cannot bring it into your reality. I did not feel worthy of anything I desired so my efforts were all in vain.

Once I discovered a simple psychological hack, using reverse affirmations, I was able to overcome self-judgement. The hack was simple, because most people believe that they represent the average person, I would repeat the affirmation to myself while focusing on random people, “you are perfect and beautiful and I love you unconditionally.”

Freeing yourself from judgment does two things. First, it allows you to feel worthy of your desires and second, it removes your limitations. Self-imposed limitations are the difference between what you think makes you happy and what really makes you happy.

Your mind is designed to create your reality. Your subconscious takes your predominant conscious thoughts, or beliefs, and goes to work to create your reality by causing you to do and say things (subconsciously) that bring about that reality. (It also taps into the collective subconscious to help orchestrate things but I’ll save that for another blog.)

The affirmation I used to free myself from judgement is an example of intentional thought. Thought once I did that and felt worthy, I no longer had to say them about others.

You can use visualization and other techniques to be intentional with your thoughts in order to create your reality too. Just be sure it’s done in a way that your subconscious mind accepts them as your truth and done on a daily basis. Your subconscious will not create outside of the boundaries of your beliefs. If it did, you would go crazy.

Has this been enlightening?

Enlightenment is one of my favorite subjects. It always comes how and when you least expect it and is completely different than you imagined. Because I am a practical guy, it came to me in a practical way allowing me to share practical tips with others about it. For you, who knows?

Self Improvement

There are a lot people out there, obsessed with self-improvement. I was certainly amongst them. What better use of your time than to improve upon yourself, right?

Coming from the perspective now that everything and everyone is perfect just as it is, how do you improve on perfection? The short answer is you don’t.

You know how Michelangelo said that he just remove everything that doesn’t look like David when asked about how he created such a magnificent piece? Well, it’s a little like that.

It’s not entirely like that though. If your focus is on that which isn’t in alignment with who you are or as Michelangelo put it, the pieces that don’t look like you, you just end up finding more things not in alignment with who you are.

So then, how do you find alignment?

Alignment is easy. It’s what feels good. It’s what makes your heart sing. It’s what moves you to do incredible things. But you can’t do it by thinking observationally. This has to be achieved by intentional thought.

Then why can’t I just change how I observe things?

Ah yes, the, “look on the bright side”, approach. There are some who have had moderate success with this one but it requires far too much work.

The reason this approach fails more often than not is that your subconscious mind has a built it security check. It is designed to verify your thoughts using your emotional response.

So if you observe something you don’t like and you say something like, “well at least it’s not raining” you will still be experiencing a negative emotion and your subconscious will know you couldn’t care less about it not raining because your emotion isn’t congruent with your statement.

Then why not just change what I observe?

This is what most people do. How’s that working out for you? That’s a rhetorical question, of course. I know exactly how it’s working out for you. It works in exact correlation with how well you can manipulate your circumstances.

People whose circumstances are ideal or who are really good at manipulating them have an easier time with life. However, if their circumstances were to drastically change in a negative way they couldn’t control, they would be lost.

So self-improvement is a farce but I should try to find alignment by just doing whatever makes me feel good?

Sort of. You don’t actually have to do anything to feel good. When you’re thinking observationally, you must stumble upon or create a circumstance which you feel good. When you are intentional with your thoughts, you can create any emotional state you want.

Most people don’t even realize what their greatest happiness comes from but everyone has a point at which they can start.

By focusing on thoughts or at least a thought on a daily basis that makes you feel good and prolonging the feeling for as long as you can, you begin to train your mind to seek out things in alignment with that feeling and it begins to grow.

Growing that feeling causes you to become in greater alignment with your true self. Once you become familiar with that feeling, you can attach it to a thought in order to consciously create a reality in harmony with your true self.

How do I create a reality in harmony with my true self?

Feeding your mind thoughts on a daily basis that have a congruent feeling attached, causes your subconscious mind to go to work, causing you to do and say things (subconsciously) that will bring about the circumstances that create that reality.

Then how do I attach a positive feeling to a thought that brings about a negative feeling?

You can’t. You will have to modify your thought just enough to get past your subconscious’ mind’s security system. When your mind finally accepts the modified version as your belief (which happens over time if you’re practicing these principles on a daily basis), you can re-modify the thought over and over again until you’ve actually created the reality your mind previously could not accept.

What does this look like in practice?

Say you are an introvert and you want to become an extrovert because you want to be well liked by everyone and don’t want to feel uncomfortable around people. To attempt the thought on a daily basis that you are an extrovert is a futile endeavor.

Introducing the thought, every day I become a little more comfortable around other people, while imagining yourself just a tiny bit more relaxed than you were the last time you felt uncomfortable around a group of people, will allow your subconscious to eventually let the thought through.

How is this example any different from self-help?

Subtle differences can be so profound, can’t they? The difference is, this process will help you find alignment with your true self because you will find guidance from your emotion.

A true introvert might wish they were an extrovert but upon using techniques such as these, discover that they actually love being an introvert, they just want to feel comfortable around groups of people.

So, I’ve been doing it all wrong this whole time?

No, you can’t. You’re perfect, remember? Everything you do is just as it should be. You have made your questions known to your subconscious and the collective subconscious, the universe, God, or whatever you believe in and it has lead you here. Take whatever resonates with you from this and embrace it. The rest isn’t in harmony with you right now so focus on what is.

Thank You
